Stumped on what to buy for your little one’s 1st birthday? Here are some ideas to inspire you!

With Rosie, the youngest member of the Eco Souk family, turning one this week, it’s got me thinking about gift ideas for little ones! What can you buy for a child’s first birthday that they will love, but not grow out of instantly?

Here’s what was on Rosie’s 1st birthday gift list. I will also add in some other ideas too, so enjoy!

1) Olli Ella Strolley

The Olli Ella Strolley was the gift I have been most excited to give Rosie. She is newly walking so it’s just perfect, as it doubles up as a stroller, basket and baby walker. The mattresses (available in Olli Ella’s three signature colours – sage, mustard and rose) are a very cute addition, making a soft base when using the Strolley as a doll’s pram. Rosie has the Natural coloured Strolley but it’s also available in White and Rose.

2) Olli Ella Dinkum Dolls

The gorgeous Olli Ella Dinkum Dolls make the perfect “first doll”, as they’re made from a soft, cuddly cotton instead of plastic. They’re unisex, posable and there’s now a lovely set of accessories to go alongside them. Rosie particularly likes to brush her Dinkums hair and take her for a walk in her Strolley – it’s very cute to watch and if you follow our Instagram, you have probably seen this!

3) Wobbel Starter

If you’re interested in Wobbel boards but nervous, this is the perfect way to make a start - a gentle introduction if you like. The Starter arrived at the end of last year and caters to children aged 0-3. It has the same superb craftmanship as its larger counterparts, offering the same open-ended play time fun, but it’s just smaller in size and lighter in weight for the littles to manage. **Now accepting pre-orders for new stock that will arrive next week!**

4) That Kid Cole shoes

This may be more of a present for the fashion-savvy mums rather than the little one, but they will love the lightweight material and how it feels almost as if they are barefoot in the gorgeous That Kid Cole shoes. As well as being super cite and fashionable, the shoes are also made from flexible material, supporting your little love’s feet and natural development – not to mention pediatrician approved as the next best thing to bare feet!

5) Grimms Toys

Grimms Toys are good old-fashioned fun for the mini-me’s in your life. My kid’s favourite has always been the Rainbow and they love building bridges, roads or just funny shapes with the brightly-coloured pieces.

6) Malabar Baby Loungewear

We’re all stuck at home for the foreseeable it seems, so cotton soft, non-sweaty loungewear makes for an obvious choice. I have gifted Rosie a set of our NB loungewear (they fit age 1 better than NB) in Pink City.

This means that myself, Rosie and Gabriella all have matching loungewear! Watch this space on my social pages – I’ll get a snap of us and share it there!

7) Olli Ella Pikis

What child doesn’t love to open and close lids whilst putting things inside a box, only to remove them a moment later – and then repeat? Rosie loves her Piki for this very reason and is regularly found loading hers with her farm animals or building blocks.

8) Banwood Trike

This item is currently sold out everywhere – though I know it’s being re-stocked in June and it is firmly on my belated gift list for Rosie for then. A very cute, retro style trike that has a removable handle at the back, this will be just perfect for our walks to school and to that park whilst Rosie is too small to peddle herself.

9) Vays Kingdom

We love supporting local businesses and even more so now than ever before! So we ordered matching birthday outfits for the whole family from Vays Kingdom in the Whale print – pink dresses for the girls and a blue t-shirt for Toby. Every piece is 100% homemade with love by Vayana – one of Dubai’s most wonderful mama’s and just all-round lovely lady!

Finally, with us spending so much time at home now, why not get the whole family involved and make the birthday cake from scratch! We attempted this vanilla with buttercream frosting for Rosie’s birthday and it was much easier than we first expected. Coming from someone who isn’t always the ‘star baker’, if I can make it without anything going wrong, so can you!

Vanilla with Buttercream Frosting

2 x Large Eggs

1 x Cup of Milk

2 ½ x Cups of All-Purpose Flour

3 tsp Baking Power

1 tsp Salt

2 x Cups of Sugar

1 x Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

1 x tbsp Vanilla Extract

½ x Cup Vegetable Oil

1 x Cup of Hot Water

Why not also treat your family to a cake smash photo shoot, albeit postponed until after the lockdown has lifted. This will give you something to look forward to and will create fun family memories to last for years to come! Our favourite photographer is @francescalouisephotography - she always does amazing work!

Are you celebrating any of your children’s birthdays over the next weeks? If so, we would love to hear in the comments your plans on how you will make their time at home extra special!
